Nettleton holds off Sylvan Hills


NETTLETON -- Senior running back Detavion Turner scored 5 touchdowns while gaining 204 yards on 31 carries to pace the top seed from the 5A-East Conference Nettleton in a 35-33 victory over Sylvan Hills on Friday night.

Nettleton's offense accumulated 338 yards while allowing Sylvan Hills 544, but the Bears turned the ball over four times.

"This was a huge win for our team," Nettleton Coach Steve Hampton said. "That was our first time hosting a playoff game as a 5A team, and we got our first playoff win as a 5A team, so I'm proud of them."

Senior quarterback Deondre Henry completed 10 of 17 passes for 96 yards for Nettleton (10-1), while Ryan Lumpkin completed 11 of 22 for 268 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions for Sylvan Hills.

Senior Terry Payton had 163 yards on six catches for Sylvan Hills, and Deon Youngblood ran 16 times for 128 yards. Ty Compton added 19 carries or 90 yards and two scores for the Bears (6-5).

Compton added his second touchdown for Sylvan Hills with 5:01 remaining from 2 yards out to make the score 28-26 in favor of Nettleton after Sylvan Hills two-point attempt was incomplete.

Nettleton came right back with Turner's fifth score on a 6-yard run with 3:21 to play to make the score 35-26. Sylvan Hills added a final score with 2:22 to play on a touchdown reception by Payton to make the score 35-33 Nettleton.

"We made a concerted effort to run the football tonight because it does open everything else up," Hampton said. "We blocked well tonight, but there were times [Turner] willed himself and that's what we needed."

Turner's fourth touchdown, this time from 5 yards out on first and goal, put Nettleton ahead 28-13 with 8:55 remaining in the third quarter. Sylvan Hills answered with 2:27 to play in the third quarter on a 62-yard touchdown pass from Lumpkin to senior wide out Darius Waddell to make it 28-20.

Sylvan Hills had a chance at a field goal with 6:53 remaining in the game, but Tito Mendoza's 25-yard attempt was blocked by a swarm of Raiders defenders.

Sylvan Hills outgained Nettleton 255-194 in the first half, which included 187 rushing yards for the Bears, but it was a 7-0 second quarter that gave Nettleton a 21-13 advantage at the half.

Turner scored all three of Nettleton's touchdowns in the first half, including two runs of 3 yards in the first quarter followed by a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter while totaling 19 carries for 84 first-half yards.

Youngblood led Sylvan Hills with 107 yards and a 15-yard rushing score in the first quarter on 12 total first-half carries. Compton scored Sylvan Hills' other first-half touchdown from 8 yards out during a first quarter in which he ran for 58 yards on 5 carries.
