Size of blazes, count swell in California

More told to evacuate; loss of homes up; 23 deaths now

California firefighter John Clays of San Diego lights a backfire Wednesday in Sonoma County, Calif., to starve a huge wildfire of fuel as crews struggle to get containment.

The wildfires tearing through California wine country flared anew Wednesday, growing in size and number as authorities issued new evacuation orders and announced that hundreds more homes and businesses had been lost. The death toll climbed to 23 and was expected to rise.
